UMBILICAL PROLAPSE OF VENTRICULOPERITONEAL SHUNT

Hydrocephalus is quite a common problem. The most popular way to treat is third ventriculostomy if patient is having obstructive hydrocephalus. This lady was a case of tubercular meningitis with non obstructive hydrocephalus. She was operated for Ventriculoperitoneal shunt. Patient was recovering well in follow up for 6 months. At 8th month, she suddenly presented with complaint of a white tube protruding from her umbilicus. For our horror, it was a VP shunt prolapse through umbilicus. The interesting point is the knots she threw on the shunt (easily visible in the picture). She was worried with the CSF drops from the shunt end and so she threw knots on it. Only God knows, how did she not develop any meningitis by shunt infection!!!!!!
